Acupuncture is considered a safe treatment when performed by a licensed and trained practitioner using sterile needles. It is important to disclose any medical conditions or medications you are taking to your practitioner before beginning treatment.
During your visit, your acupuncturist will take a detailed medical history, discuss your symptoms and treatment goals, and conduct a physical exam. The physical exam will include an assessment of pulse and tongue. Next, you will lie down on a treatment table, and the acupuncturist will insert needles into specific points on your body. The needles typically stay in for 20-30 minutes, during which you may relax and even fall asleep.
The number of sessions will vary depending on the condition being treated, its severity, and how your body responds. Acute conditions usually require fewer sessions (anywhere from 3-6), while chronic conditions may warrant more treatment (6-12). Once a condition is managed, many patients elect to continue treatments for balance and preventative care. Your acupuncturist will assess your progress and recommend a treatment plan that is tailored to best fit your individual needs.
